FEMSLASH FEBRUARY 2023 #4: In which Cameron and Donna enjoy a Sunday morning

After a very long week at Phoenix, a late-ish Friday night of celebrating Bos and Diane’s anniversary, and a Saturday spent entirely in pajamas and mostly in bed, alternating between snacking and napping, Donna was ready for some activity on Sunday. She’d gotten up at 7:30 to feed the cats, and had put on some workout gear while she was at it, ready to walk and stretch and do at least some stuff around the house.

Cameron had gotten out of bed at 7:30 too, if only to seem like a good wife. But after watching the cats eat, and looking out into a blindingly bright morning, Cameron had turned to Donna, frowned at her leggings, moisture wicking racerback tank, and good sneakers, and said, “…yeah, okay, I’m going back to bed. SMELL YA LATER, BOSS,” before going upstairs. Marshmallow, a shy rescued flame point siamese that they’d adopted shortly before opening the Phoenix office so that Licorice would have some company, had trotted off after Cameron, as if she too had decided that she could use some more sleep.

“Okay, well, see you at brunch, then!” Donna had called after her.

Undeterred, Donna went outside and sat by the pool for a long while. She breathed deeply, and enjoyed the sunshine. She sat still, grateful to not be rushing either to or around the office, even though she loved the work. When she went back inside, she turned on the radio in the kitchen, ate some granola and fruit, and then she flipped through the most recent issue of Ms. She did not think about hardware, or code, or software, or new features, or servers, or interfaces. It was glorious.

By the time Cameron finally made it back downstairs, around 10:30, Donna had finished reading through her magazine, gone for a walk around the block, done some light stretches, and sung along with the radio. When Cameron went into the kitchen she found Donna playing with Licorice. Standing by the counter, she was waving around one of their feather wands, as Licorice swiped aggressively at the stuffed mouse dangling from the end.

“Hey,” Cameron yawned, going directly to the refrigerator. “How’s your morning?”

Still waving the wand, Donna smiled broadly. “It’s been quiet, and solitary, and I haven’t thought about work at all. I’ve loved every minute of it!”

When Cameron didn’t say anything, Donna looked over at her. Eyes narrowed, Cameron was scanning the refrigerator shelves the way a general might look at a proposed battle strategy. She was wearing a plain white t-shirt and jeans, and her freshly washed hair was still damp. Distracted, Donna forgot what she was doing.

“Nice,” Cameron grinned, reaching into the refrigerator. As she was picking out ingredients, she glanced over at Donna, who was still looking at her. Confused, Cameron asked her, “What?”

Licorice sank her teeth into the stuffed mouse, and managed to pull the wand out of Donna’s hand. It clattered to the floor, and the sound made Donna jump. She looked down to see the cat playing with the fallen toy, and then, face slightly pink, she looked back up at Cameron and said, “Oh, nothing.” She stepped around Licorice, and went to the refrigerator. She kissed Cameron on the cheek, and tucking a strand of hair behind her ear, she said, “You just do that so well.”

Cameron scoffed and reached for the milk. She handed it to Donna, and said, “What? Look just androgynous enough for it to be perceived as a threat by the weak?”

As Cameron reached for the flour, Donna put the milk on the counter, and said, “You say that like it’s a bad thing. I’m into it!”

Cameron handed the flour and an onion to Donna, who kissed her on the cheek again.

“Okay, okay,” Cameron blushed. “I’m thinking pancakes and omelettes, and whipped cream and bacon. Are you down to indulge?”

Donna kissed her a third time. “You have no idea.”

alternate thief lord ending that has been in my mind rent free for about 4 years

OK SO

back in fifth grade, we had to read a book for an English literature class, and it was Thief Lord by Cornelia Funke. it was a goddamned masterpiece and I loved it.

now, I've reread it, and now I’m reminded of how much I adored that book and how much I miss the innocence of my childhood and also how similar it is to six of crows. honestly, the emotional attachment I have to this book is astronomical.

so the ending (uh, SPOILERS) is that Scipio, aka the Thief Lord, gets his age bass boosted by a magical carousel and becomes like. 20 something-year-old dude. and the ending is pretty good ?? like, for a kids book ?? and also because Scipio is an impulsive idiot ??

BUT. I am a die-hard proscipio shipper. and now looking back. the ending doesn’t sit right.

so. ALTERNATE ENDING:

SCIPIO: head-canon: demisexual; gay; he/they

alternate future: I feel like Scipio wanting to be older was a cute plot point and part of his character, but what would have been far BETTER is if he STAYED a child. because when he’s 20 something in the ending, he’s still mentally a teenager. his mentality hasn’t exactly changed. so the first thing, Barbarossa still gets turned into a child, but Scipio gets pulled back from that, and he accepts his fate for the next few years, pools his assets until he’s 18, then promptly tugs the rug out from under his father’s feet, and leaves. he then uses his assets, and his knowledge from his schooling as a capitalists son, and opens schools, orphanages, and maybe a museum or something. a library. he also revives the Theater, because I said so. he gets a nice house in Venice overlooking the square, reading, writing, helping out with his various projects, being a philanthropist, etc.

Prosper:

head-canon: ace; bisexual (he/him) [no, I’m not projecting at all]

alternate future: Prosper stays in Venice. he grows up in Ida’s care until he’s 18, goes to college to study art history or something cute and fun and becomes a teacher at a local college. he learns to take a chill pill, and is the one who often calls the gang back together for reunions. after he gets into college though, he and Scipio move in together and the two of them live happily ever after because they are boyfriends and they are in love, your honour. at some point, after he becomes a teacher, they get married and adopt a little orphan girl, and they are also Best Dads.

Hornet/Caterina: head-canon: lesbian; they/them

alternate future: oh my god. first of all, I love Hornet. second of all, I feel like they’re very curious about the world as a whole, so after they graduate high school (also raised in Ida’s care), they take a year or so to travel the world. when they come back to Venice, they have a cool girlfriend and settles down as a writer, and helps out Scipio with his projects and ventures. they eventually become a world-renowned writer, and the whole squad is so mcfricking proud of them.

Riccio: head-canon: bisexual; he/they [ya’ll cant tell me my man didn’t have a thing for Prosper]

alternate future: Riccio and Mosca are best boys and I will stand by that until the day I die. they start a gondola business together, and Scipio also gives them charge of taking care of the Theater. Riccio eventually buys a small apartment next to the canals and close to the town for him and Mosca. they also take in kids on the streets and help them out.

Mosca: head-canon: ace; pansexual; they/them

alternate future: as far as I remember, Mosca likes gadgets and mechanics and machines and stuff so I think they opened a little mechanics shop!! and of course, they moved in with Riccio, they take care of the gondolas and the theater's upkeep, and Mosca also helps out Hornet when they need help for a story about a mechanic or something. I also think they would take up art/painting in their free time.

Boniface/Bo:

head-canon: demisexual; he/him

alternate future: okay so Bo is an interesting character for the future! I think of course he spent the rest of his childhood days with Prosper and Hornet and Ida, then probably went to school somewhere abroad. to me, it seems fitting that he comes back in his early twenties or so, settles into an apartment near his brother and everyone else, and helps Victor with the Private Investigator stuff like Scipio does in canon. given his chemistry with Victor and how he’s kind of a father figure to Bo, I thought it would be cute and fitting. Bo is smart, and he’s a curious soul like Hornet, so I do think he’s the type to seek out puzzles and try to solve them. he checks in on Ida every week, and they have tea together.

Ida Spavento:

head-canon: lesbian; she\her

alternate future: she raises the kids, helps Scipio with her connections to get him on his feet when he first starts his projects for orphanages and schools and such. she gets featured in some international photography magazine, which brings her a lot of renown and stuff. she takes care of the kids even when they’re older, they have dinner with her every month as tradition and she and Victor spend a lot of time bickering to each other practically every week.

Victor:

head-canon: aromantic; gay; he/him [he and Ida are wlw/mlm solidarity don’t @ me]

alternate future: he continues to be a PI because this man is magnificent and I would die for him. he helps Ida with the kids when they’re young, most of the gang call him Dad, he helps Hornet with her travels abroad, Prosper with his college applications, and helps Mosca and Riccio kick-start their stuff, like the Theater and the mechanic shop. later, Bo becomes his assistant and after a few years, he retires with Ida, but can still be found with Bo in his office at late hours, trying to piece together some case or another.

So yeah! those are my ideal endings for each character. again, I love this book and the canon universe is incredible and I love it so much. I’m just a lonely gay idiot.

I did not include Barbarossa or the aunt or the villains because I don’t like any of them and they got the ending I believe they fully deserved in canon.

Grandmixer D.ST.

Derek Showard, better known by the stage name GrandMixer DXT, is an American musician, one of the earliest to use turntables as a musical instrument in the 1980s. Renowned for his scratching techniques and his showmanship on stage, such as breaking in to dance or scratching records with other parts of his body other than his hands

Early in his career, he was known as Grand Mixer D.ST, a reference to Delancey Street on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, New York City. He was featured in the influential hip hop film Wild Style.

Widely recognized as a pioneer, Grand Mixer DXT is credited as being the first turntablist. He was the first person to establish the turntable as a fully performable and improvisational musical instrument. Especially important is his technique of altering the pitch of the note or sound on the record.

He is also credited with helping to popularize DJing through his scratching on Herbie Hancock's single "Rockit", from the Bill Laswell and Material produced album Future Shock. He is featured in the 2001 documentary, Scratch.

D.ST’s original group was The Infinity Four MC’s consisting of Kingpin Shahiem, Mike Nice, Baron and Legendary female rapper Kimba.

While working with the Infinity Rappers n 1982, he was part of the first hip hop tour to Europe with Afrika Bambaataa, Rammellzee, Fab 5 Freddy, Rock Steady Crew, the Double Dutch Girls, and graffiti artists Phase 2, Futura, and Dondi.

Phase 2

In late 1972, Phase 2 first used an early version of the "bubble letter" or "softie", a style of writing which would become extremely influential and is considered a "giant leap" in the art form.The puffed-out, marshmallow-like letters drawn by Phase 2 were soon copied by other artists who added their own variations.

Phase 2 quickly embellished on his original form, creating and naming dozens of varieties of softies, such as "phasemagorical phantastic" (bubble letters with stars), "bubble cloud", and "bubble drip".He described the thrill of tagging subway cars as "impact expressionalism".He is also credited with having pioneered the use of arrows in graffiti writing around this same time. Hip-hop journalist Jeff Chang has noted that Phase 2's canvasses from 1973 have "been widely recognized as defining the early genre."

Futura 2000

He started to paint illegally on New York City's subway in the early 1970s, working with other artists such as ALI. From 1974 to 1978, he served in the U.S. Navy and traveled all over the world. In the early 1980s he showed with Patti Astor at the Fun Gallery, along with Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Richard Hambleton and Kenny Scharf.

Futura painted backdrops live on-stage for British punk rock band The Clash's 1981 European tour. In 1985, he was on the first meeting of the graffiti and urban art movement in Bondy (France), on the VLP's initiative, with Speedy Graphito, Miss Tic, SP 38, Epsylon Point, Blek le rat, Jef Aérosol, Nuklé-Art, Kim Prisu, Banlieue-Banlieue. More recently, he is a successful graphic designer and gallery artist.

One of the most distinctive features of Futura's work is his abstract approach to graffiti. While the primary focus, during the 1980s, of the majority of graffiti artists was lettering, Futura pioneered abstract street art, which has since become more popular. Conversely, his aerosol strokes are regarded as different from those of his peers, as they are as thin as the fine lines usually associated with the use of an airbrush.

Dondi

Graffiti became a serious part of Dondi's life in the mid-1970s. He tagged using "NACO" and "DONDI", and worked on refining his style, gradually moving from simple tagging to building more elaborate pieces. Using the name Dondi (a version of his own name) was considered very risky at the time, as the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and the New York Police Department (NYPD) were trying to crack down on writers. In 1979, Dondi officially adopted his name when he painted a giant piece on the roof of his house.

He became a member of TOP crew (The Odd Partners) in 1977. In 1978, Dondi formed his own crew, named CIA (Crazy Inside Artists), which included other prominent artists such as his good friend DURO. For the next 20-odd years, Dondi became recognized as the stylistic standard, influencing generations of graffiti writers.

Dondi pioneered many of the styles and techniques still used by modern graffiti artists. Though he would often do wildstyle pieces for the benefit of other writers (like the famous 2MANY piece), he wanted the public to be able to read and enjoy his work, so he would focus on readable letters with intricate fills and characters.

scratch

Scratching, sometimes referred to as scrubbing, is a DJ and turntablist technique of moving a vinyl record back and forth on a turntable to produce percussive or rhythmic sounds. A crossfader on a DJ mixer may be used to fade between two records simultaneously.

While scratching is most associated with hip hop music, where it emerged in the mid-1970s, from the 1990s it has been used in some styles of rap rock, rap metal and nu metal. In hip hop culture, scratching is one of the measures of a DJ's skills. DJs compete in scratching competitions at the DMC World DJ Championship and IDA (International DJ Association), formerly known as ITF (International Turntablist Federation). At scratching competitions, DJs can use only scratch-oriented gear (turntables, DJ mixer, digital vinyl systems or vinyl records only). In recorded hip hop songs, scratched "hooks" often use portions of other songs.

Graffiti

In the early days, the ‘taggers’ were part of street gangs who were concerned with marking their territory. They worked in groups called ‘crews’, and called what they did ‘writing’ – the term ‘graffiti’ was first used by The New York Times and the novelist Norman Mailer. Art galleries in New York began buying graffiti in the early seventies. But at the same time that it began to be regarded as an art form, John Lindsay, the then mayor of New York, declared the first war on graffiti. By the 1980s it became much harder to write on subway trains without being caught, and instead many of the more established graffiti artists began using roofs of buildings or canvases.

The link between hip hop and graffiti evolved as a competition, much like the dance moves of the hip hop culture. Graffiti began to show up on subways in New York and other cities as a form of expression of the culture who listened to rap music. Graffiti distiguished by "tags" or distinguishing marks of the originators and a way to distinguish or stand out from other graffiti artists. Graffiti quickly spread and was picked up by others.

Graffiti is viewed as a form of artistic expression by some and trash by others. Graffiti has been seen adorning the album covers of some rap artists, on sides of buildings, on busses, on clothing, and various imaginative places where you sometimes have to stop and wonder, "how in the world did they manage to get up there?"

Young rappers growing up and wandering the city streets still see graffiti all around them. For some, graffiti represents decay, but for hip hop culture, graffiti provided the visual inspiration that encouraged other forms of creativity and expression, such as emceeing.

Ed Piskor

Ed Piskor is an American alternative comic book artist. He gained his first fame illustrating stories in Harvey Pekar's 'American Splendor' series. Among his original works are the satirical comic 'Wizzywig' (2011) about hacking culture, and the educational graphic novel series 'Hip Hop Family Tree' (2012-2016), which deals with the history of hiphop. In 2017 he created another historical passion project, 'X-Men: Grand Design', a nostalgic look back at the history of Marvel Comics' 'X-Men' franchise.

Hip Hop Family Tree

In 2012 Piskor started a monumental project, named 'Hip Hop Family Tree' (2012-2016). It narrates the history of hiphop and various legendary artists and groups, among them the Sugarhill Gang, Grandmaster Flash, Run DMC, Schoolly D., the Beastie Boys, Ice-T, Public Enemy, Dr. Dre, Rakim, Will Smith... Piskor said he was inspired by Robert Crumb's biographical comics about old blues and country artists. Just like Crumb loves music from the interbellum, Piskor is a hardcore hiphop fan. Even as a child he'd try to dig up the oldest singles by certain hiphop artists, particularly trying to find out where a certain musical sample came from? He is so well-educated in the genre that he felt he would be the right artist to make a comic book about the genre. As a bonus he would learn more about its roots too. 'Hip Hop Family Tree' doesn't just focus on the historic facts, but Piskor also illustrated many fascinating and occasional funny anecdotes about certain artists. Graphically Piskor gave the stories a yellowish newsprint effect to match the "old school" feeling.

From January 2012 until December 2015, the stories ran weekly on the website 'Boing Boing'. Fantagraphics later published the series in comic book format. In 2015 'Hip Hop Family Tree, Volume 2' won the Eisner Award for Best Reality-Based Work. It also entered the New York Times Best Sellers list, landing the artist an interview in Time Magazine. Rap legend DMC (of Run DMC) praised 'Hip Hop Family Tree' with the words: "I'm happy this book is here, because it tells a truth." Fab Five Freddy (Grandmaster Flash) shared a panel from one of the comics on his Facebook page and stated: "Being in an Ed Piskor comic is cool enough to freeze hot water." Chuck D. (Public Enemy) also tweeted favorable comments about Piskor's work.

As a huge fan of comics and hiphop since childhood Piskor also saw a correlation between the two art forms. Both are trash pop culture, initially scorned by true art lovers but eventually gaining more critical respect. Many cartoonists and hiphop artists take pseudonyms to give themselves a different public persona and alter ego. Both rapping and cartooning are often said to be easy. Most importantly, Piskor noticed that both hiphoppers and cartoonists have a tendency to borrow material, or sample, from their predecessors and colleagues. It motivated him to pay more homage to other comics in some of his panels.

how to get you in good shape, with 17 tips.

While getting in shape has been a start-and-stop-and-start-again affair for me over the last couple years, over the long run, I’ve become fitter than ever.

I’ve dropped more than 30 pounds altogether (or about 2 stone 6, for the British-inclined among you), I run regularly, I’ve become more consistent with strength training, and I’ve dropped several sizes in clothes.

I’m not saying all that to brag. If you saw the details of how I got here, it’s nothing to be proud of — I ran a marathon at the end of 2006 and then did a short triathlon but then stopped exercising altogether for awhile. I became a vegetarian and was eating very healthily (is that a word?) … but then I slowly started eating more junk food and gaining weight.

Recently, I dropped sweets from my diet (cakes, pies, donuts, candy, CHOCOLATE!, sodas, etc.), and surprisingly I don’t really miss them. I’ve been exercising with my sister and my wife on alternate days and it’s been great. I still have more pounds to drop, but I can’t complain. I’m healthy.

The ups-and-downs of my fitness efforts have highlighted some important points for me. Key among those points: don’t quit. If you mess up, and stop for awhile, that doesn’t mean you should quit altogether. Just keep going. You’ll get there eventually.

And during this journey, which hasn’t stopped and probably won’t ever stop, and I’ve learned a lot over these last couple of years, about what works and what doesn’t.

What follows are some of the more important truths I’ve learned, in the trenches, that I’d like to share with you. Take from them what you will — everyone will find different things that work for them, but I think just about all of them are important to share.

Small steps. That you get fitter in stages, as you exercise more, is pretty obvious I think. You might start out just walking, but as you get fitter, you might add some slow jogging to your routine. And then eventually you’re running three miles, several stages later. However, this really applies to everything, including diet, and many people don’t realize that. You shouldn’t try to change your entire diet overnight — do it in stages. Small steps, one thing at a time, and you’ll get there. Just start eating more fruits at first, for example. Then cut out sodas. Then eat more veggies for dinner. Then change your white bread for whole wheat bread. Then cut out candy at work. And so on. The thing is, you get used to each thing after awhile, and so the changes don’t seem drastic. A year later, and you’re eating extremely healthily (that word again), and you can’t imagine going back to your old diet. Small steps — this is extremely key, to both diet and exercise.

Find short-term rewards. Most people quit their diet or exercise program because they’re looking for immediate results. And they’re discouraged when they don’t get them. But you won’t get immediate results. One fitness trainer said something like, “After a month, you’ll start feeling some results. After two months, you’ll start noticing results. After three months, others will start noticing.” And that’s pretty true — it takes months before you start to see the results you want … but in the meantime, you have to look for other things to keep you going. Those shorter-term rewards could be simple things like the great feeling you get after a workout — that helps me stay motivated. Or you could give yourself a treat (something healthy, preferably) or buy a book or something like that.

Track your progress. The scale is probably the most popular way to see your progress, but other ways include measuring your waist, or taking photos of yourself each month. You could also track your performance — for example, do a 5K every month to see if you’re getting faster, or log your miles to see them increase. However you do it, you should have some kind of objective way to see your progress over the weeks and months. Otherwise, you might not really notice the difference — but the numbers or pictures will.

Enjoy yourself. Very very important. If you see your exercise as extremely difficult, or painful, you won’t be able to sustain it for long. You’ll quit. If you see your diet as very restrictive, or torture, you’ll go back to junk food in a short while. You must find exercise that you enjoy, and find healthy foods that taste good to you. Maybe not chocolate cake good, but good nonetheless. Experiment with new recipes until you find ones you absolutely love. (Try my soup and chili recipes for example.) Above all, enjoy the whole process. It’s what’s kept me doing it — I love my new life.

Never ever give up. Maybe the most important truth on this list. If you give up, you won’t get to your goal. Very obvious, I know, but the problem is that people don’t put this into action. Messing up by falling back into junk food or stopping exercise — that happens. Life gets in the way. No one is perfect. Just forget about that stuff, and move on. Learn from your failures, adjust your plan to prevent the same thing from happening again, and start again. If you stop, that’s OK — just start again. Always start again. If you do that, there’s no way you won’t eventually get to your goal.

Get a workout partner. I’ve mentioned this before, but it’s been the key to my most recent exercise success. I began running with my sister, Katrina (who btw is an incredible inspiration — she’s come a very long way in the last year), and even though we’re at different levels, we really enjoy our runs. When we agree to meet at 5 a.m. for a run, I have to be there, or I disappoint her. And sure, once in awhile we cancel appointments, but most of the time we’re there, and we run, and that’s the important thing. These months of running with her have really gotten me in much better shape. Now I’m also running with my wife, so having two workout partners is taking me to another level. Get a workout partner. Best move I’ve ever made.

Brush your teeth after dinner. This is such a simple thing, but it really helps. It makes you have that fresh, clean feeling in your mouth, and makes you not want to eat an after-dinner snack. For me, after-dinner snacks or desserts are what ruin my diet a lot of the time.

Vary your workouts. This helps keep things fresh and fun. For runners, for example, don’t just do 3 miles every day at the same pace. Vary the distance, the route, the speed. Do intervals. And do stuff other than running — go hiking, go biking, play basketball, do strength training, swim, paddle. Mixing it up will get you in even better shape, challenging your body in new ways, and making it an enjoyable process.

Focus. There are always a lot of things we want to accomplish, goals we want to focus on … but by spreading ourselves thin, we lose focus and energy. Focus on one thing at a time in order to really get it ingrained as a habit. For example, for one month, focus on adding healthier foods to your diet (and dropping some of the less healthy ones). After that month, it’ll be ingrained. The next month, add walking or jogging or something like that, and only focus on that. One goal at a time, one month at a time, and you’ll get healthy.

Rest is important. People who really get into exercise often forget this. Without rest, exercise just keeps breaking down our muscles, and they don’t have time to recover and grow. The exercise puts stress on our bodies, and the rest allows them to adapt and improve. Without the rest, they can’t really improve. You should always follow a day of hard workouts with a day of rest. If you’ve been exercising a long time (and then you probably don’t need this article), you can do hard-easy days, or rotate different types of exercises so that parts of your body are getting rest on different days, but even then always have at least one day of complete rest, or you’ll get burned out.

Shoot for a year or two, not a few weeks. There are no instant fitness fixes, no matter what that website or magazine promises. Don’t believe them. Getting fit and healthy takes time, and should be gradual. If you’ve got a long way to go, aim to be healthy after a year. Those with a very long way might shoot for two years. Those closer to the goal could try for 6 months. Main thing: gradual improvement.

Focus on your diet first. I’m a huge proponent of exercise for health and other benefits, but if you’re looking to lose weight and/or fat, the biggest factor is diet. You can cut out more calories from what you eat than you can burn with exercise. Of course, both should be vital components of your fitness regiment, but start on diet first, then add exercise. Don’t think that because you are exercising you can eat whatever you want (unless you’re a marathoner or triathlete or something like that) — you won’t reach your fitness goals that way, most likely.

Don’t compare yourself to magazine models. Seriously. I’m sure we’ve all done this, wishing we looked like that slim or cut or buff model on the cover of a magazine. It’s natural. However, it’s not healthy. First of all, genetics plays a key factor in how these models look — most of us don’t have body types like that. Second, these models don’t usually look like that — they go on special diets a couple weeks before a photo shoot, so they look perfect for that day. Third, most of these magazines do some pretty heavy photoshopping. And fourth, what’s important is getting a healthy body image, not trying to look like a perfect model. Focus on health, not appearance.

Find the exercise that works for you. I love running, but not everybody is born to be a runner. Many people enjoy swimming or water aerobics. Many like lifting weights. Many like cycling, or tae bo, or Pilates. Others like sports like basketball or soccer or rugby. It doesn’t really matter what you choose, as long as you’re moving and you enjoy what you’re doing. Also find the solution that works best: working at the gym, going on the road (running and cycling, for example), working out at home (which I do), etc. Choose the one that you’re most likely to stick to.

Learn to be present. Going back to one of the key principles above, “enjoy yourself”, one of the best ways to do that is to learn to really be present when you exercise and eat. For example, when you run, try to keep your mind in the moment, and feel your body and your breathing, and experience your surroundings as your run past them. As you eat, really taste the food and feel the textures, instead of gobbling it down mindlessly. It makes the entire experience much more enjoyable.

Don’t let your body adapt too much. Sometimes we hit plateaus, where we’re still doing the same exercise but not really improving. The reason is that you have to keep changing things, either taking your exercise to a slightly higher level (gradually), or giving it new angles or routines. Otherwise, your body adapts to doing the same exercise over and over, and it stops improving. Once you start hitting a plateau, take it to a new level by increasing intensity or length of time in some way.

Get inspired. Another key concept for me. I like to read blogs or websites that show me how others have been successful. One Zen Habits reader, for example, recently gave me some inspiration with his blog, Fat Man Unleashed. He’s doing a great job, making amazing progress, and it’s inspirational. Fitness magazines, for me, began to seem useless, because they just rehash the same articles over and over. But then I realized that I like to read these magazines for the inspiration, not the information. Find something to inspire you and it’ll keep you going.

Collisions in the Dark (Ch 22): Sudden Death

Warning: depictions of violence and violent language

Pairings: Jason Todd/Tim Drake and Tim Drake/Ra’s al Ghul

Summary: Ra’s makes good on his word and so does Damian.

“Ra’s,” Tim warned, taking a cautious step forward around Jason’s side. He moved his eyes from Ra’s to Dick. His brother tried to meet his stare with a calming expressing, but jerked his head back with a hiss as the pressure on his neck increased.

“Bastard,” he ground out through his teeth as his neck spasmed against the sharp edge of the blade.

Ra’s paid Dick no mind, his eyes still locked on Tim.

Tim stopped where he was, hands spread at his sides, suddenly feeling like he needed them to balance himself as everything around him took a sharp turn into hell.

“I warned you that I’m a man of my word, Timothy.” Ra’s said.

They knew that they might die tonight, he reminded himself but that didn’t make him any more willing to stand by and watch this happen. He had to try. He had to do something.

“You don’t have to do this.”

“Tim,” Jason hissed, arms still raised, his gun locked on Ra’s. Tim knew without looking over his shoulder that Jason didn’t have a clear shot. Shooting through Dick to hit Ra’s wouldn’t even been a guarantee with the thick body armour of Dick’s suit. If it couldn’t pass through Dick’s suit, Jason would have put a bullet in Dick for nothing.

“No,” Tim didn’t look at him, just extended a hand behind him. A silent request for patience. Everyone just needed to stay calm. Otherwise this would spiral into a bloodbath very quickly.

“What do you think you’re going to gain from this?”

Tim eyed Bruce out of the corner of his eye. He was sure Batman had a plan up his sleeve. That just left Tim with the question of why the hell wasn’t he doing anything?

“I believe I’m going to dispose of those who’d keep you from me. Once and for all.”

“And guarantee that I’ll despise you for the rest of my life.” said Tim.

Ra’s sighed. “Why do you feel the need to have this conversation over and over again, Detective? The answers won’t change. I find it so tiresome.”

Tim’s lips twitched upwards with the hint of a smile. “Honestly, me too. But it did give him a few more seconds.”

Tim pointed at the ground where Bruce was stretched out.

Ra’s jerked his gaze down right as Bruce fired his taser gun, the electrodes shooting out and puncturing Ra’s in his side.

Tim lunged forward and nearly slammed into the pair. He wrapped his fingers around the blade of Ra’s’ sword and pulled it towards him. It was painful— and a stupidly easy way to injure his hands, as Ra’s’ blade cut through the thin leather on the inside of his gloves, but it was the only way he could see to protect Dick’s neck from being sliced open as Ra’s’ muscles seized under the electric currents.

Dick was already moving, shoving at Ra’s’ elbow from his side, even as Ra’s started to collapse onto one knee, Dick buckling with him. Tim stabbed his teeth deep into his bottom lip and planted his boot against Ra’s’ side, using it as leverage to yank harder on the blade. Ra’s’ hold loosened all at once, and sent Dick and Tim crashing to the floor.

Tim landed hard on his back. He hissed, hands cradled against his chest as he examined his bleeding palms. They would definitely need stitches. He could feel the blood as it made a squiggling trail down and around his wrists under the material of his gloves.

Above him, Ra’s dropped his sword, only to yank out the taser electrodes with a strangled cry. Tim stared up at him, trying to remind himself that this man was human, but it was hard to remember a fact like that when a taser to the chest barely seemed to affect him. Did he even feel anything? Ra’s took a moment to breathe hard, still hunched on one knee, before he regained his composure. His hand reached for his weapon again.

Jason fired two shots at the ground by the sword, but it didn’t seem to discourage Ra’s. He picked it up by the hilt and pushed to his feet, twisting the wrist of his sword hand like he was regaining feeling in it.

“On your feet. Now!” Jason barked at his family, taking two quick steps forward and angling in front of them.

Bruce had moved behind Dick and was hauling him to his feet.

More gunshots echoed off the walls of the room. Tim pushed himself off the ground. His palms left bloody half moons on the floor when he lifted them.

The distinct snap sound as the magazine of Jason’s gun emptied itself of its last bullet, followed quickly by Jason’s strained, “fuck”.

Tim didn’t even need to look. He threw himself sideways, coming to a skidding stop between Jason and Ra’s. Ra’s reined back, his sword poised to strike at the ready.

Tim, breathing hard, reached behind him and twisted his fingers around one of the straps of Jason’s thigh holsters where it clipped to his utility belt. Jason tried to shift around Tim, to fight beside him, but Tim gave his strap a harsh tug. The rough material rubbed the gashes in his hands and Tim couldn’t help the aggressive hiss that erupted from his mouth.

Jason paused in his movements, then stepped back behind Tim’s shorter form.

Tim grinned at Ra’s despite the pain and fatigue he was feeling. “You wouldn’t put a sword through me. Would you, Beloved?”

“I wouldn’t be so cocky if I were you,” said Ra’s, “After all, I have a Lazarus Pit just a few floor below us. If you get in the way and get killed for it, I could always bring you back.”

“I used up my get out of jail free card bringing Jason back, remember?”

“You think I don’t have an assassin willing to give away theirs to bring you back? I could have it done easily.”

Tim knew he wasn’t exaggerating, but he wasn’t deterred. “You won’t. Put me in the Lazarus Pit and I might not come back the same. You wouldn’t take that risk.”

Ra’s eyed him. “You’re right. I wouldn’t.”

Ra’s stooped and placed his sword on the ground in front of him. Before Tim could wonder what he was playing at, Ra’s was already moving quick as a snake.

He grabbed Tim’s bo staff off the ground where Tim had abandoned it and swung it up and across his body. The effect was like taking a golf iron to the face. It caught Tim against his jaw and sent him crashing sideways into the wall.

Tim hit the ground hard on his side and coughed blood onto the stone floor. He tried to rise to his feet but only made it as far as his knees before his head spun and ached something horrible.

He heard more than saw what happened next in between his own wheezing breaths.

Jason’s aborted cry as he tried to come to his aid, only to be met halfway by Ra’s. The pummeling fight that erupted between them that sent computers and keyboards crashing to the stone floor. A single Q key bounced across the floor and came to a spinning stop in between Tim’s splayed hands. Tim dripped blood onto the piece of plastic as he knelt there blinking at it.

There were more sounds of shattering glass. Tim guessed it was the rest of the door being kicked in.

The scuffle of black clad feet moving in and out of Tim’s line of vision as Dick and Bruce turned to take on their new opponents. Someone in his family must have been standing guard over him, because no hands descended on Tim to drag him out of the room and lock him in a cell.

He wasn’t stupid though. He knew that this reprieve wouldn’t last long. His family was counting on him to be able to get back on his feet and defend himself.So Tim breathed hard against the throbbing pain in his head and pushed himself onto his feet. He stumbled backwards until he could brace himself against the desk at his back.

In front of him, his family were alternating attacks against Ra’s, each doing their best to fill the space made when the other was thrown to the side. The ninjas however, were an unwelcome distraction and therefore, it was Jason who took the brunt of Ra’s’ force, backed up against a wall, trading brutal blows to the face and gut. There was a thick trail of blood sliding down Jason’s upper lip from his broken nose. It mixed with his saliva so that when Jason snarled and jabbed at Ra’s’ eyes with his gloved fingers, he showed him his bloody smile.

Ra’s threw off his hands and grabbed Jason by the hair.

“He may have chosen you,” He yanked Jason’s head back at a harsh angle and spat the words against his cheek, “but I’ll be damned if he’ll keep you!”

Ra’s slammed Jason’s head into a computer screen. Once. Twice. Tim watched a crack form and widen in the dark glass, now stained with red, and then he was barreling into Ra’s from the side.

Ra’s’ hands were ripped away from Jason’s head. Jason cried out as a chunk of hair was ripped from his scalp.

Tim fell heavily on top of Ra’s’ chest and managed to pin one of his arms under his knee. He punched Ra’s in the face and was satisfied with the splatter of blood, but at this point he couldn’t tell if the blood was his own or Ra’s’.

Suddenly he was back in that alleyway where this all started, hearing Jason tell him to aim for the areas that would get the most blood. Jason didn’t try to stop him now. Tim struck again, and again, until he was whaling on Ra’s, trying his damnedest to beat Ra’s’ face into a bloody pulp.

Tim didn’t even realize Ra’s had managed to free his arm until suddenly his hands were wrapped around his throat. He had a strong grip. Tim could feel where his fingernails burrowed into his skin. In the end Bruce had to yank Tim backwards by the shoulders to pry him loose from Ra’s’ grip. His efforts earned Bruce a roundhouse kick to the face as a ninja slid into the empty space between Ra’s and Tim.

Tim rolled sideways to avoid being used as a doormat.

He found Jason with his eyes, slumped against a desk and looking like he’d just walked off the scene of a car crash. One side of his face was streaming a thick flow of blood from a nasty gash on his forehead.

“Jason.”

Jason’s head lolled towards the sound of his voice. His eyes fluttered open and closed, blood catching on his eyelashes. He was a sitting duck… lying there, stunned and waiting to be picked off.

Tim started to crawl towards him. Ra’s was moving too. A dagger in his hand.

“No,”Tim grabbed for him as Ra’s tried to rise. He caught Ra’s shirt and let his body go limp, his dead weight dragging on Ra’s’ arm. “You bastard. No.”

Ra’s shook him off with an aggressive hiss, but Tim grabbed for him again before he could fully pull away.

Ra’s turned on him so suddenly that Tim almost reared back. But there was nowhere for Tim to go. Ra’s latched onto Tim’s arm in kind and knocked him onto his back with a knee to Tim’s shoulder. His knee didn’t shift away afterwards, instead Ra’s pressed down with his full body weight, pinning Tim to the ground. In a horrific moment of clarity, Tim grasped for Ra’s’ leg all the while knowing that he’d never escape the joint lock fast enough.

With efficient and heartless speed Ra’s bent Tim’s arm back across his free leg. Over the background noises of knuckles and metal connecting with flesh, Tim heard the distinct popping sound of the tendons in his elbow tearing at the hyperextension and the sickening pain of his shoulder dislocating.

Tim screamed, his back arching off the floor.

Ra’s lowered himself over Tim’s panting form until his lips were touching Tim’s ear. Despite the intimacy of their positions, Ra’s voice was detached and cold.

“This is your last warning. Stay down.”

Tim made a keening noise low in his throat as Ra’s released his arm. He curled up on his side and pulled his arm protectively against his chest, but the pain was still a heavy throb that radiated through his upper body. Tim pressed his cheek to the stone floor, trying to focus on anything else until it dulled.

He found himself locked in a stare with Jason, visible through the empty space between Ra’s’ arm and his side. His cries must have brought Jason back to the here and now.

It brought other’s too.

Ra’s flinched backwards and collapsed on the floor a moment later. Tim didn’t understand it until he saw one of Robin’s birdarangs sticking out of his shoulder.

Ra’s howled and tried to rise up, but Damian was already standing over Tim.

“I warned you not to fuck with my family, Grandfather. This is what happens when you don’t listen.”

He kicked Ra’s in the shoulder, pushing the blade in deeper for good measure.

Damian didn’t take the time to gloat. His hands were already shoving under Tim. “Get up, Drake. We’re making a run for the plane.”

Damian pulled Tim’s arm across his shoulders and they stumbling to their feet together. Cass cleared the way for them.

“Tim.” Jason and Steph had caught up with them in the hallway. Steph kept a firm hold on Jason before he went careening into Tim and Damian.

Jason reached out and pulled Tim closer to him with a hand against the side of his face, hissing in pain as they knocked foreheads with each other. Still, Tim nuzzled Jason’s cheek with his nose. It was hard to be gentle when they were both so injured.

“I’m alright. We’re alright.” he breathed against Jason’s cheek.

“Now’s really not the time, guys!” Steph glanced behind her at the rear of their little pack where Dick and Bruce were holding off their opponents. She managed to pull Jason back a few steps.

“You can spoon each other on the flight home,” she panted under the weight of Jason’s larger form as she got them moving again. “And then maybe one of you can spoon me. This constant almost dying trend we got going on is really not helping my anxiety problems.”

Tim could feel the huff of Damian’s breath against his neck as he pulled Tim along behind the pair. He couldn’t tell if it was from laughter or exertion. “Yeah, sure. We all get out of thing alive and I’ll even let you be the little spoon. Just keep moving.”

“Deal.” Steph called over her shoulder.

They staggered on.
